Installing a beta version of iOS can be exciting, but sometimes the bugs and glitches make it too unstable for daily use. If you’ve updated to iOS 26 beta (or iPadOS 26 beta) and now regret it, don’t worry—you can downgrade from iOS 26 beta to iOS 18. Whether you backed up beforehand or not, this guide walks you through the entire process.

Why Downgrade From iOS 26 Beta?

Beta software often comes with issues such as:

  • App crashes or incompatibility
  • Rapid battery drain
  • Sluggish performance
  • Features that don’t function properly

If these problems are affecting your experience, it’s a good idea to revert to the stable iOS 18 release.

What You Need Before You Start

  • A Mac with Finder (macOS Catalina or later) or a Windows PC with iTunes
  • A Lightning or USB-C cable
  • Your iPhone or iPad
  • (Optional) An archived backup from iOS 18/iPadOS 18

⚠️ Important: If you installed watchOS 26 beta on your Apple Watch, it will not pair with your downgraded iPhone on iOS 18. Also, you can’t manually downgrade watchOS—you’ll need to contact Apple.

Steps to Downgrade From iOS 26 Beta

Follow these instructions to remove iOS 26 beta and return to the latest public version of iOS 18:

  1. Launch Finder on your Mac (or iTunes on Windows).
  2. Connect your iPhone or iPad using a Lightning or USB-C cable.
  3. Put your device into recovery mode:
    • iPad with Face ID:
      • Press and quickly release Volume Up
      • Press and quickly release Volume Down
      • Press and hold the Top button until the recovery mode screen appears
    • iPhone XS or newer:
      • Press and quickly release Volume Up
      • Press and quickly release Volume Down
      • Press and hold the Side button until recovery mode appears
  4. When prompted on your computer, click Restore (not Update).
  5. Your computer will erase your device and install the latest public release of iOS or iPadOS.
  6. Wait for the process to complete—this may take several minutes.

Restoring Your Backup

If you made an archived backup before upgrading to iOS 26, you can now restore your device:

  • In Finder or iTunes, select Restore Backup
  • Choose your iOS 18 backup and proceed

If no backup is available, you’ll still return to iOS 18 but without your previous data.

Final Notes

  • Downgrading won’t remove your Apple ID—you’ll need to sign in during setup
  • You can always opt back into the beta later, once the software is more stable
  • Remember: Apple only signs certain versions of iOS, so always check that iOS 18 is still being signed before downgrading

Conclusion

Beta testing isn’t for everyone, and if you find the latest iOS 26 beta unstable, it’s smart to downgrade from iOS 26 beta and wait for a more polished release. Using recovery mode and Finder or iTunes, you can get back to iOS 18 in no time—just be sure to keep backups for smoother transitions in the future.
