iOS 26.5 Update Adds Encrypted RCS and Maps Upgrades

iOS 26.5 Update

iOS 26.5 Update is now available for iPhone users, bringing a small but useful set of improvements ahead of Apple’s next major software release.

The latest update, released alongside iPadOS 26.5, focuses on messaging, Apple Maps, wallpapers, security fixes and a few changes for users in the European Union. While this is not a major redesign, it still brings features that many iPhone owners will notice in daily use.

Apple has also released iOS 26.5.1, a minor follow-up update that fixes a wired charging issue affecting a small number of iPhone Air and iPhone 17 models when the battery is nearly empty.

Users can download the new software by opening Settings, tapping General, and selecting Software Update.

iOS 26.5 Update Brings Encrypted RCS Messaging

One of the most important additions in the iOS 26.5 Update is end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging in beta.

This means supported messages between iPhone and Android users can now receive stronger privacy protection. When encryption is active, the content of messages cannot be read by Apple, mobile carriers or other third parties.

The feature works only when both sides support compatible RCS messaging. It also depends on carrier availability, so not every user will see it immediately. In supported conversations, users should see a lock icon showing that encryption is active.

This is a useful step for people who regularly message friends, family or colleagues using Android phones. It helps make cross-platform messaging more private and secure.

Apple Maps Gets Suggested Places

The iOS 26.5 Update also improves Apple Maps with a feature called Suggested Places.

This feature recommends nearby locations based on local trends and a user’s recent searches. For example, Apple Maps may suggest cafés, attractions, restaurants or other places that match the user’s location or search activity.

The goal is to make local discovery easier. Instead of searching from scratch, users can get recommendations that feel more relevant to where they are and what they may be interested in.

At launch, Suggested Places appears to be available in the United States and Canada. Apple is expected to expand availability over time, although wider rollout details have not yet been confirmed.

iOS 26.5 Update Adds a New Pride Wallpaper

Apple has included a new Pride Luminance wallpaper in the iOS 26.5 Update.

The wallpaper features dynamic colours that shift and refract when the iPhone is moved or unlocked. It adds a fresh visual option for users who enjoy Apple’s seasonal and themed wallpapers.

While this is a small addition, wallpapers remain one of the easiest ways for users to personalise their devices without changing deeper settings.

EU Users Get New Support for Third-Party Devices

The iOS 26.5 Update also includes changes for users in the European Union.

As part of digital competition requirements, Apple is opening some features that were previously more closely tied to its own devices. This includes better notification support for third-party smartwatches and fast-pairing support for some non-Apple earbuds.

However, these features will also depend on third-party manufacturers updating their own devices and software. That means availability may vary by brand, device and region.

The change could make iPhones more flexible for users who prefer non-Apple wearables or audio products.

iOS 26.5.1 Fixes iPhone Charging Issue

Shortly after iOS 26.5, Apple released iOS 26.5.1 as a smaller update.

This version addresses a wired charging issue that affected a limited number of iPhone Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max users. The issue could prevent wired charging when the battery was nearly drained.

For affected users, iOS 26.5.1 is an important fix. Even though it is a minor update, it helps improve reliability for newer iPhone models.

Security Fixes and Stability Improvements

Like most iPhone software updates, the iOS 26.5 Update also includes security patches, bug fixes and stability improvements.

These background changes may not be as visible as new features, but they are important. Security updates help protect iPhones from known vulnerabilities, while stability improvements can reduce crashes, glitches and performance issues.

For most users, installing the latest version is recommended because it keeps the device safer and more reliable.

Should You Install the iOS 26.5 Update?

The iOS 26.5 Update is not a huge release, but it is still worth installing for most iPhone users.

The encrypted RCS messaging feature improves privacy for supported chats. Apple Maps suggestions make local discovery easier. EU users get better support for some third-party accessories, and all users benefit from security fixes and performance improvements.

The update also prepares iPhones for Apple’s next major software cycle. With Apple expected to reveal more software changes soon, iOS 26.5 feels like a final refinement before bigger updates arrive later.

For anyone using an eligible iPhone, this update is a practical download. It may not transform the device, but it improves privacy, reliability and everyday usability.
