he iOS 26 release date is quickly approaching, and iPhone users are eager to know when Apple’s biggest update in over a decade will arrive. Announced at WWDC 2025, iOS 26 has been in beta testing for three months and is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 17 series this September.

With its all-new Liquid Glass UI, revamped Lock Screen, redesigned Control Center, updated app icons, new ringtones, and upgraded Apple Intelligence features, iOS 26 is being called the biggest redesign since iOS 7 in 2013.

Why Apple Jumped to iOS 26 Instead of iOS 19

One of the surprises was Apple skipping the expected “iOS 19” name. The company instead unified naming across platforms, making iOS 26 part of the same family of updates that share the new design language. This ensures consistency with iPadOS, watchOS, and macOS, all updated to match Apple’s next-generation UI approach.

iOS 26 Release Timeline Based on Previous Years

Looking at Apple’s past iOS releases provides a clear pattern:

  • iOS 18: Release Candidate on Sept 9, 2024 → Public Release on Sept 16
  • iOS 17: RC on Sept 12, 2023 → Public Release on Sept 18
  • iOS 16: RC on Sept 7, 2022 → Public Release on Sept 12
  • iOS 15: RC on Sept 14, 2021 → Public Release on Sept 20

If Apple’s 2025 keynote happens on Tuesday, September 9, as widely rumored, we expect the iOS 26 Release Candidate to drop that day. The full iOS 26 release date will likely be Monday, September 15, 2025, in line with Apple’s traditional Monday launches.

Even if the event is shifted by a day, September 15 remains the most probable release date.

iOS 26 Features Coming This Fall

Apple is positioning iOS 26 as a transformational update. Key highlights include:

  • Liquid Glass UI – A bold redesign for Lock Screen, Home Screen, and Control Center.
  • Apple Intelligence Upgrades – Live Translation, advanced Genmoji, new Writing Tools, ChatGPT integration, and expanded Image Playground.
  • Refined Visuals and Sounds – New app icons, ringtones, and haptics.
  • Deeper Ecosystem Integration – WatchOS 26 and macOS 26 rely on iOS 26 to unlock some Apple Intelligence features.

iOS 26 Compatibility: Which iPhones Will Get It?

The iOS 26 release supports nearly all the same devices as iOS 18, with only three older models dropping off: the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max.

Supported iPhone models:

  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE (2nd gen)
  • iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE (3rd gen)
  • iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, 16e
  • iPhone 17 (all models, shipping with iOS 26 pre-installed)

⚠️ Note: Older models like the iPhone 11 can install iOS 26 but will miss out on several advanced Apple Intelligence features due to hardware limitations. Features like on-device ChatGPT integration, advanced Image Playground, and adaptive AI-powered battery optimizations are reserved for newer iPhones such as the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17 series.

Based on Apple’s consistent timeline, the iOS 26 release date is almost certain to be September 15, 2025. With its redesigned Liquid Glass UI, major Apple Intelligence upgrades, and expanded compatibility, iOS 26 will mark the most ambitious iPhone software update in years.

Whether you’re upgrading to the iPhone 17 or updating an older iPhone, this release represents a milestone moment for iOS.
