Traveling abroad often means dealing with SIM cards, roaming fees, and complex setup processes. With eSIM while traveling internationally, iPhone users can skip the hassle and enjoy a simpler, more secure way to stay connected.

Benefits of using eSIM abroad
eSIM offers stronger security than a physical SIM because no one can remove it if your iPhone is lost or stolen. You also avoid carrying, swapping, or waiting for physical SIM cards to arrive. Additionally, you can store multiple eSIMs and switch between them in Settings, which is ideal if you regularly visit the same destinations. Supported iPhone models allow two active eSIMs at once, letting you keep your home number and add a local plan.

What you need for eSIM use
To use eSIM while traveling internationally, you’ll need:

  • An iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later
  • A wireless carrier or global service provider that supports eSIM
  • A Wi-Fi connection* (except for eSIM-only iPhone 14 models or later)

If your iPhone has a SIM tray, you can use a physical SIM alongside an eSIM for maximum flexibility.

International roaming with your carrier
Some carriers include free international roaming in select plans. Others offer travel passes or affordable add-ons that you can activate before departure. In most cases, roaming with eSIM works exactly like roaming with a physical SIM. You can even top up data or adjust plans digitally through your carrier’s app.

Buying a local eSIM in your destination
Many countries have local carriers that sell prepaid or postpaid eSIM plans. Prepaid eSIMs can be purchased online before arrival or at kiosks, stores, and airports upon landing. Typically, activation is done through a QR code or carrier app. Regulations in some countries require showing your passport to buy a SIM. For long-term stays, postpaid plans may require local residency proof, a bank account, or a credit card. On supported iPhones, you can store eight or more eSIM profiles and keep two active at the same time.

Purchasing a prepaid data eSIM from global providers
Worldwide service providers offer prepaid eSIM plans for use in over 190 countries. Plans differ in data allowances and duration, and you can buy them before traveling. These data-only eSIMs work well as a secondary line, allowing your primary number to stay active for calls and texts while you use local data abroad. You can set your data line in Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data and toggle roaming on or off for your home line as needed.

Special note for iPhone 14 models and later bought in the US
An unlocked iPhone 14 or later supports eSIM activation with over 400 carriers in 100 markets. Before traveling, confirm eSIM compatibility with your carrier and check iPhone band support for your destination. Many global providers also offer long-term prepaid eSIM plans.

For eSIM-only iPhone 14 models or later, activation does not require a Wi-Fi network.
