Apple initially considered using Claude for Siri upgrades, but Anthropic’s high fees led to a deal with Google’s Gemini instead. Claude had already been integrated into Apple Park but was sidelined due to the significant cost demanded by Anthropic.
Though Apple is utilizing AI from OpenAI and Anthropic, it acknowledged that its internal models are not as strong as those developed by other companies. The Google Gemini deal confirms this, but Apple continues to use external models in other areas.
Apple’s Claude Siri Deal Misses Opportunity
Bloomberg reported that Apple had seriously considered using Claude for Siri but backed out after Anthropic requested billions. The Google deal, valued at about $1 billion annually, is a fraction of what Anthropic demanded. For comparison, Apple earns around $20 billion annually from its partnership with Google as the default search engine.
Claude Siri Deal vs. Google Deal
Apple and Anthropic failed to reach an agreement due to financial disagreements. With Claude priced much higher, Apple turned to a more affordable solution with Google Gemini.
Gurman also mentioned that the Anthropic deal would likely have escalated in price over the next few years. This made the Google contract appear more financially attractive.
Transitioning to In-House AI Models
Despite using third-party models, Apple plans to build its own AI models. R&D investments made in 2025 indicate that Apple will soon rely on in-house AI systems, reducing reliance on external AI tech.
