Apple may revive its chip partnership with Intel, but with a new twist. Apple would design the chips while Intel handles fabrication. This shift could change Apple’s chip supply chain for upcoming devices.
Intel’s Role in Apple’s Future Chip Supply
Analyst Jeff Pu from GF Securities expects Intel to supply Apple with chips starting in 2028. These chips will use Intel’s 14A process, designed for mass production. Intel might provide some chips for Apple’s A21 or A22 iPhone models. However, TSMC will remain Apple’s primary chip supplier.
Apple’s Transition Away from Intel
Apple previously used Intel-designed processors for Macs with x86 architecture. In 2020, Apple began transitioning to its own silicon for Macs. This change was a major step in Apple’s goal to control more of its hardware and software.
Intel’s Role in Apple’s Modems and Future Chips
Intel also supplied cellular modems for iPhones 7 through 11. It could soon supply Apple’s lowest-end M-series chips for some Mac and iPad models. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects Intel’s 18A process to be used for these chips, starting in mid-2027. However, there is no indication that Intel will supply chips for iPhones yet.
Strengthening Apple’s U.S. Manufacturing and Supply Chain
Intel’s partnership with Apple could help diversify its chip supply chain. As competition for chip manufacturing rises, this could benefit Apple. Nvidia has reportedly surpassed Apple as TSMC’s largest customer. This partnership would also support Apple’s push for more U.S. manufacturing, in line with the Trump administration’s focus on domestic production.
