12.9-Inch MacBook With A18 Pro Chip Could Launch in 2026

12.9-Inch MacBook With A18 Pro Chip Could Launch in 2026

The 12.9-inch MacBook could soon join Apple’s laptop range as a lower-cost option. New industry research suggests Apple plans to launch the device in spring 2026. The company aims to target entry-level and mid-range buyers.

This model would sit below the MacBook Air. Apple appears focused on affordability rather than raw performance.

TrendForce Reports on the 12.9-Inch MacBook

According to TrendForce, Apple is preparing a 12.9-inch MacBook with competitive pricing. The firm did not share full specifications. However, the report supports earlier rumors about a cheaper MacBook.

Industry watchers say Apple wants to widen access to macOS. A lower price could help achieve that goal.

A18 Pro Chip Expected Inside

Reports indicate the 12.9-inch MacBook will use the A18 Pro chip. Apple currently uses this processor in the iPhone 16 Pro lineup. The chip includes a 6-core CPU, a 6-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine.

Performance should match the M1 chip closely. That level would make the laptop suitable for everyday tasks and light creative work.

Pricing and Market Position

Analysts expect the 12.9-inch MacBook to start between $599 and $899 in the U.S. Many believe Apple will choose $699 or $799. That pricing places the device well below the MacBook Air, which starts at $999.

Apple could reintroduce a true budget MacBook for the first time in years.

Design and Hardware Trade-Offs

The 12.9-inch MacBook may feature an ultra-thin and lightweight design. Observers compare it to Apple’s discontinued 12-inch MacBook. Cost savings may lead to compromises.

The laptop could ship with 8GB of RAM. It may also lack Thunderbolt support. Instead, it would rely on standard USB-C ports with slower speeds.

Supply Chain Signals Support a 12.9-Inch Display

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously reported that Apple was developing a cheaper MacBook. He said it would use the A18 Pro chip and a display close to 13 inches. He also mentioned bright color options.

Later, DigiTimes claimed Apple chose a 12.9-inch panel. TrendForce now supports that report. The size matches recent iPad Air and iPad Pro displays.

What the 12.9-Inch MacBook Could Mean

If Apple launches the 12.9-inch MacBook, it could reshape the lower end of the Mac lineup. Students and first-time Mac buyers may benefit most. Budget-focused users could also find it appealing.

Attention now turns to Apple’s spring 2026 window. A launch by March or April would confirm years of speculation about a lower-cost MacBook.
