How to Install the macOS Tahoe Developer Beta

Apple has launched the macOS Tahoe developer beta, giving users early access to the next major update ahead of its full release this fall. While the update is targeted at developers, anyone with an Apple ID can download and install it. Here’s how to install macOS Tahoe developer beta and what you should consider before doing so.

Why You Might Want the macOS Tahoe Beta

macOS Tahoe introduces major visual and functional upgrades:

  • Liquid Glass interface for a refreshed macOS look
  • The Phone app on Mac with call support
  • Powerful Spotlight actions and deep Apple Intelligence integration
  • A dedicated Games app
  • Live Activities in the menu bar
  • Customizable Control Center and Messages backgrounds

If you want a preview of macOS 26 features or are developing compatible apps, the beta offers a head start.

Is Your Mac Compatible?

Before installing, confirm your device supports macOS Tahoe. Compatible Macs include:

  • MacBook Air (M1/M2/M3, 2020 or later)
  • MacBook Pro (Apple silicon, 2020 or later)
  • MacBook Pro 16-inch (2019)
  • MacBook Pro 13-inch (2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • iMac (2020 and later)
  • Mac mini (2020 and later)
  • Mac Studio (2022 and later)
  • Mac Pro (2019 and later)

Unsupported Macs include most Intel models from 2018 and earlier.

Important: Back Up Your Mac First

Always back up using Time Machine before installing a developer beta. Beta software can be unstable and may cause app crashes, data loss, or system freezes. With a Time Machine backup, you can safely revert to your previous macOS version if needed.

Step-by-Step: Install macOS Tahoe Developer Beta

Follow these steps to install macOS Tahoe developer beta safely:

  1. Register your Apple ID for free at developer.apple.com.
  2. Open System Settings on your Mac.
  3. Navigate to General → Software Update.
  4. Click the info (i) icon next to “Beta Updates.”
  5. Choose macOS Tahoe 26 Developer Beta from the dropdown list.
  6. Click Upgrade Now to begin downloading and installing the update.

Once the installation starts, your Mac will update just like a regular software upgrade. Let it complete the process and reboot into macOS Tahoe.

Should You Install It on Your Main Mac?

Apple recommends avoiding installation on your daily-use Mac. The beta is prone to bugs and may break apps or workflows. Use a secondary device or wait for the public beta in July if you want a more stable experience.

Summary

Now you know how to install macOS Tahoe developer beta and what to expect. With its exciting new interface and powerful features, macOS Tahoe is shaping up to be a significant upgrade. Just make sure to back up your system and confirm compatibility before proceeding.
