When Apple briefly opened its ecosystem to licensed third-party hardware from 1995 to 1998, most Mac clones came in tower or desktop form factors. But Hardware Research, a specialized manufacturer, took a different route with the HR 604e/200—a rackmountable PowerPC Mac clone designed for professional use in studio, server, or industrial settings.

The 604e/200 featured a 200 MHz PowerPC 604e processor, support for dual-processor upgrades, and a healthy 128 MB of RAM out of the box. It came with a 3.1 GB SCSI hard drive, a 24X CD-ROM, and a 4 MB ATI XCLAIM 3D video card—providing solid multimedia capabilities for the era.

This Mac OS-compatible system was built on the Tsunami architecture, the same used in Apple’s Power Macintosh 9500 line. However, what set the 604e/200 apart was its 19″ rackmount form factor, appealing to professionals who needed rack integration in audio/visual production environments or research labs.

Officially sold in early 1998 and discontinued by mid-year, the Hardware Research 604e/200 is now one of the rarest Mac clones ever built.

Here are the complete Mac Clone Specs for this rackmount rarity:

Final Thoughts

The Hardware Research 604e/200 was one of the most unique machines of Apple’s Mac clone era. With its rackmount chassis, support for dual processors, and robust RAM and VRAM configuration, it catered to a niche segment of professional users requiring performance and modularity in constrained or rack-based environments.

Although Apple ended its clone program in 1998, this machine remains a compelling artifact for those interested in the rare hardware intersections of enterprise computing and Mac OS compatibility. The 604e/200 is a testament to how diverse the Mac ecosystem could have been—had it remained open.
